My partnership with Sebastian began at NEC’s Preparatory Division where he was a student, then barely 14, at a time when I would periodically accompany there having just graduated from Yale and returned to Boston. We played a movement of Brahms’ F major Sonata for one of the student recitals and it went well enough, so that the next time Sebastian was looking for a pianist I was the one to receive the phone call. This second engagement was a performance of the same Brahms movement for Pieter Wispelwey’s masterclass at Harvard which, according to many, was quite a success. At that point we both realized that we were excited about playing together and would be able to collaborate as partners despite the substantial age difference. Since then we have played numerous duo recitals and will be releasing our first CD featuring works by Franck, Schemmer and Shostakovich later this year.
